Frederick John Symons (listed on the memorial as, 'Simmonds'), a colliery worker, born in Plymouth, was the eldest son of a Cornish couple, John and Emily Symons of Rhiw Syr Dafydd. He served in the 2nd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment, arriving in France in February 1915. In early May the battalion, part of 12th Brigade, was in the line near the Frezenberg Ridge during the Second Battle of Ypres. Private F J Symons (2896) was killed or died on 8 May 1915, aged 18. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate, Ypres, and is commemorated also on the Battalion Memorial in St Cadoc's Church, Trevethin.
