Edmund Stanley Rowlands, university student, son of Charles Rowlands, widower, of Ty-pen-y-waun, Oakdale, and formerly a pupil at Lewis School, Pengam from 1908 to 1913, attended the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He enlisted there in the South Wales Borderers, but later transferred to the Royal Engineers. He was wounded whilst serving in France in 1916. Pioneer E S Rowlands (159318) died of wounds in a Salford Military Hospital 19 August 1916, aged 21, and was buried on 26 August in the family plot in Penmaen Chapelyard. He is commemorated also at Lewis School and at Aberystwyth University.
