Gilbert Phillips, collier, son of a Forest of Dean couple, William and Charlotte Phillips of 27 Central Avenue, served in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, and arrived in France with them in August 1915. At the end of July 1917 the battalion were stationed on flooded ground near Boesinghe Chateau north of Ypres. On 29 July the battalion moved into the front line just west of the Yser Canal. Private G Phillips (1355) died of wounds on 30 July 1917, aged 23. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium; nearby were several casualty clearing stations. He is commemorated also on the Abertillery War Memorial.
