Arthur Owens, husband of Ada Jane, served initially in the Monmouth Regiment and then the 5th (Service) Battalion South Wales Borderers which in early 1918 was the pioneer battalion for the 19th (Western) Division, Third Army. On 24 March 1918, the start of the First Battle of Bapume, a phase of the Kaiserschlact (German Spring Offensive), the army retreated to maintain the line. Private A Owens (39344) was killed in action 24 March 1918, aged 24. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France, the memorial to those with no known grave who fell in the Arras Sector, Artois.
