Ivor James Nelmes, born 28 May 1898, son of Mrs Martha Evans, adopted son of John & Elizabeth Higgs, Tredegar, he was a collier's boy before joining the Royal Navy as a boy seaman, second class, in August 1913. He served in the period September 1914 - July 1917 in the warships: HMS Minerva, Implacable and lastly Dublin.  In August 1917 Able Seaman Nelmes (J26377) was invalided out suffering from tuberculosis, and paid a war gratuity. He died at the end of 1918 in Monmouthshire, aged 20.
